Journal Three with Marysa

My active reading is going great. At first I would forget to highlight and write in the margins because in highschool I never did it but I think I am starting to get used to it. Now, I am doing well with highlighting and writing in my margins but still struggling to remember to look up the words that I don't know the meaning to.

I haven't really found a weakness in any of the books except in The House On Mango Street it gets kind of hard to understand sometimes. Some of the stories just don't make sense to me. A strength in The House On Mango Street is that it is very creative. A Long Way Gone is what I would prefer to read out of the two because I find it more interesting and fun to read. This book has a lot of detail and can really bring the story to life which I enjoy a lot.

A theme that I found in chapter 6 is trust. Trust is big in this chapter because the chief of the village of Kamatar had to trust them and believe that they were not rebels. And had to trust the boy that said he knew them and that they weren't rebels. It's hard to trust someone you don't know. And also, trust is big when it comes to all 6 of the boys because they are all slowly starting to lose hope and being able to still trust each other and have hope takes a lot at this point. A quote that I like in this chapter is "People stopped trusting each other, and every stranger became an enemy"(Beah 37).

  1. I agree the House On Mango street is sometimes confusing to read and get into to. I think its because its written from i child's point of view. I think trust is a excellent theme because all trust is gone now between everyone, even children . which is very sad.

  3. I noticed trust was a big issue throughout also. No one can trust anyone but the people they're close to and maybe not even that. I really like the quote you chose as well.
