Journal Four Henry

In this chapter The Earl Of Tennessee, we meet Earl, a quiet man with a southern accent that works at night as a juke box repairman. He lives in ednas basement and has two little dogs that he takes everywhere with him. Sometimes Earl will come out his basement home and give his records Esperanza and her friends. A good theme for this chapter would be innocence.
I think innocence represents Esperanza because when she said this "The word is that Earl is married and has a wife somewhere. Edna says she saw her once when Earl brought her to the apartment. Mama says she is a skinny thing, blond and pale like salamanders that have never seen the sun. But I saw her once too and she's not that way at all. And the boys across the street say she is a tall red headed lady who wears tight pink pants and green glasses. We can never agree on what she looks like, but we do know this. Whenever she arrives, he holds her tight by the crook of the arm. They walk fast into the apartment, lock the door behind them and never stay long"(Cisneros pg 70) This paragraph shows how innocent Esperanza is because she doesn't realize that those women are prostitutes and not earls wife. This Earl Of Tennessee is filled with figurative language and the writing is at its best throughout the whole chapter. For example "and finally the moan of the wooden door as it opens and lets loose its sigh of dampness" (Cisneros pg 71) Cisneros further describes Earls house to the reader through figurative language.

Many people have influenced me through out my childhood, My friends, teachers, neighbors, athletes but the one person who has the most is my grandfather. In my eyes he was the coolest person ever and I wanted to be just like him. I spent a lot of time with him as a kid and he introduced me to my love for cars and guns, how I dress and my interests in antiques. He taught me to be wise and save my money and work your hardest at everything you're involved in. I am who I am today because of my Grandpa.
