Journal Four with Marysa

The chapter that I was assigned to was No Speak English. This chapter had a lot of detail and good similes such as on page 76, "The taxi door opened like a waiter's arm." and "A foot as soft as a rabbit's ear." A paragraph that I thought the writing was at its best was on page 77 in the middle, "My father says when he came to this country he ate hamandeggs for three months. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Hamandeggs. That was the only word he knew. He doesn't eat hamandeggs anymore." I thought this paragraph was funny and I could hear it in my head while I was reading. A theme in no speak english is that people who are not able to communicate well are at the bottom of society. Mamacita moves to the country to be with her husband and is trapped in her apartment because she can't speak English.

A person that has influenced me was my math teacher my freshman year of highschool. Mr. Zarcone knew I hated math, more than anything actually but he didn't let me give up on it and helped me out all throughout the year. Even through the years that he wasn't my teacher I knew I could go to him if I needed help on my math homework. He became not only a teacher but a friend and someone I could talk to and I wasn't the only one to have him as a friend. This definitely affected my behavior because without him I think I would have given up and probably wouldn't have done so well in math. After I had him as a teacher I became better at math and realized that I can't just give up, I need to at least try and do my best.

  1. I had a teacher that helped me also. It was my English teacher. I still talk to her and she helps me become a better person.

  2. I can relate to this because my math senior year really pushed me to become a better student in and out of the classroom, She really helped me boost my motivation, just like yours.
